Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was a 17 year old living with his parents and siblings on the prosperous family farm in Copiah County, MS. He enlisted on 25 April 1861 in Crystal Springs and mustered as a Private in Company C, 16th Mississippi Infantry on 26 May 1861 in Corinth, MS. He was appointed 3rd Sergeant on 30 April 1862.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Sharpsburg, MD on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was on wounded furlough to about March 1863 and was elected Junior 2nd Lieutenant on 11 April 1863. He was wounded again, by a gunshot to his left foot at Spotsylvania Court House, VA on 12 May 1864 and was in Richmond, VA hospitals until furloughed on 27 May. He was in a hospital in Mississippi by July, but back with his Company in September 1864. He was on detached service due to disability by February 1865, was surrendered at Citronelle, AL on 4 May 1865, and signed a parole at Jackson, MS on 15 May.

After the War

By 1880 he was a physician in Lawrence County, MS. In 1900 he was listed a farmer and merchant there, but had resumed his general medical practice at Tryus, MS by 1910. He'd retired in Lawrence County by 1920.

Personal details from family genealogists and the US Census of 1860 and 1880-1920. His gravesite is on Findagrave; his stone has him as Benjamin D. Henington.

He married Mary Narcissus Catching (1843-1925) in August 1864 and they had 8 children; Mary's brother William H. Catching (1836-1899) was also in Company C of the 16th Mississippi.
