Age 22 (or 18), he enlisted at Paulding, MS on 27 April 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company E, 16th Mississippi Infantry on 27 May 1861 in Corinth. He was appointed First Corporal on 26 April 1862 at the Army reorganization.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action at Sharpsburg, MD on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

His father S.E. Selby of Jasper County, MS filed for his son's final pay in December 1862.
