Before Sharpsburg

Age 30, he enlisted on 10 May at Port Gibson and mustered as a Private in Company G, 16th Mississippi Infantry on 31 May 1861 in Corinth. He was 5th Sergeant from 31 July to 31 August 1861, then reverted to Private. He was appointed 4th Sergeant on 22 December 1861 but again reduced to Private on 26 April 1862.

On the Campaign

He was wounded and captured in action at Sharpsburg, MD on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was paroled on 30 September 1862. He was on wounded furlough and transferred to Captain G.V. Moody's Madison (Louisiana) Artillery to date from 28 September 1862, but there is no record of his service with them.
