Age 23, he enlisted on 25 May 1861 at Natchez and mustered as a Private in Company I of the 16th Mississippi Infantry on 1 June 1861 in Corinth.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in the ear in action at Sharpsburg, MD on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was wounded again, by a gunshot at Chancellorsville, VA on 3 May 1863 and was captured on the Weldon Railroad near Petersburg, VA on 21 August 1864. He was a prisoner at Point Lookout, MD until sent to Aiken's Landing, VA for exchange on 14 March 1865. He was paroled on 1 May 1865 at Winchester, VA.
