He was mortally wounded in action on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He died of his wounds at hospital, Frederick, Maryland. The Medical and Surgical History lists him: "G. Robertson A 63 NY age 42. Intermediary amputation in the middle third of the right femur for shot injury, flap method, by A. A. Surg. A. V. Cherbonnier, on October 17, 1862. He died on October 21, 1862. Specimen 360, Army Medical Museum."

He is buried in Antietam National Cemetery, Section: New York, Grave Number 252.
