Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was a 19 year old bookkeeper living with widowed mother and siblings on the large family farm in Yazoo County, MS. He mustered as 2nd Corporal of Company B, 12th Mississippi Infantry at Corinth, MS on 12 May 1861. He was promoted to 3rd Sergeant by February 1862 and to 2nd Lieutenant on 28 April 1862.

On the Campaign

He was wounded by a gunshot at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was in a Culpeper, VA hospital by 26 September and in Richmond, VA by 29 September. He was promoted to First Lieutenant on 22 July 1863 and to Captain by May 1864. He was wounded by a gunshot at Spotsylvania Court House, VA on 12 May 1864 and in hospitals or on furlough into August 1864. He was slightly wounded in the chest on the Weldon Railroad near Petersburg, VA on 21 August 1864 and was on furlough from 4 December 1864 to at least February 1865. He signed a parole at Vicksburg, MS on 2 June 1865.

After the War

By 1870 he was farming his own place next door to his brother-in-law Pleasant Washington Alley at Yazoo City, MS. In 1880 he was a clerk in a drugstore in Satartia, Yazoo County, MS, also with nieces Lora Jane (6) and L.M. (Lucy May, 2) Alley in his household; their mother Lucy, Mary's brother George's wife, died in 1879 and the Stampleys apparently took on her children, a least briefly.

He may actually be buried in the Stampley family cemetery near Mechanicsburg, Yazoo County, MS.

He married Mary C (or E) Alley (1846-1881) and they had a son Andrew Alley Stampley (1866-1921).
