Age 30, he enlisted on 24 April 1861 at Vicksburg, MS and mustered as a Private in Company E, 12th Mississippi Infantry on 10 May 1861 in Corinth, MS.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was captured at Chancellorsville, VA on 3 May 1863, briefly at the Old Capitol Prison in Washington, DC, then sent to City Point, VA for exchange on 10 May 1863. He was captured (or deserted to the enemy) on 4 March 1865, took an oath of allegiance in Washington, DC, and was sent to St. Louis, MO on 13 March 1865.
