Age 24, he enlisted and mustered in Fayette County, MS on 28 May 1861 as a Private in Company D, 19th Mississippi Infantry. He was sick in hospitals from April to 5 July 1862.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in the thigh in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was on wounded furlough to at least February 1863. He was absent again, sick in hospitals, from March to 21 May 1863, and detailed to the Provost Guard from 6 November 1863 to October 1864 due to disability. He was paroled at Louisa Courthouse, VA on 1 June 1865.
