Before Sharpsburg

Age 35, he enlisted and mustered in Oxford, MS on 15 May 1861 as 2nd Sergeant of Company E, 19th Mississippi Infantry. He was elected Junior 2nd Lieutenant on 25 November 1861. He overstayed a furlough and was listed as absent without leave from 20 February to 8 April 1862 and was sick in Richmond, VA hospitals into August.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in the chest in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was sick again and resigned his commission in December 1862 (accepted on 14 January 1863) due to disability from chronic medical conditions.
