Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was an 18 year old farmer living with his older brother Jim and other orphaned siblings at Blackshear in Pierce County, GA. He enlisted at Brunswick, GA as a Private in the Wiregrass Minutemen, Company L (originally M), of the 13th Georgia Infantry on 16 August 1861. The regiment was reorganized as the 26th Georgia Infantry on 10 May 1862, and he became a member of the renamed Company E on that date.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was wounded again, mortally, by a gunshot at Winchester, VA on 13 or 14 June 1863, and died of wounds at the CS General Hospital in Staunton, VA on 9 July 1863.

He married Rebecca Jane Young (1842-1928) in April 1861 and they had two sons - Jesse Jr. (b. 1860) and Jefferson Davis Jones (1862-1916).

His brother Jim was also wounded in action at Sharpsburg.
