Before Antietam

In 1860 he was 17 years old and a fisherman, like his father, in Swampscott, MA. He enlisted in Lynn on 19 April 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company I, 29th Massachusetts Infantry on 14 May. In September or October 1861 he was sentenced by a court martial to forfeit a months' pay, charge not given.

On the Campaign

He was slightly wounded in the hand in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

In April 1863 he was docked $23.35 for losing his musket (Springfield, cal. 58), 40 rounds of ammunition, and his accoutrements "through neglect of duty." He was listed as a deserter at Paris, KY on 26 May 1863.

After the War

By 1870 and to at least 1880 he was again a fisherman, and lived with his parents and brothers in Swampscott. By 1900 he was a boatman there.
