In 1860 he was a 34 year old distiller on his father's farm at Talking Rock in Pickens County, GA. He enrolled as First Lieutenant of Company D, 23rd Georgia Infantry on 31 August 1861.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action at Turner's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.

The rest of the War

His father Andrew filed for his final pay in January 1863.
