In 1860 he was a 19 year old farmer on his parent's small place in Gilmer County, GA. He enlisted as a Private in Company D, 23rd Georgia Infantry on 10 September 1861 at Camp McDonald in Kennesaw, GA.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action at Turner's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.

The rest of the War

His father George applied for his final pay in July 1863.
