Before Antietam

Age 36, he enrolled on Long Island, NY and mustered as First Sergeant of Company K, 42nd New York Infantry on 22 June 1861. He transferred to Company I later that same day. He was reduced to ranks and appointed Musician on 28 June, again promoted to Sergeant, date not given, and appointed Sergeant Major of the regiment on 1 April 1862. He was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant of Company K on 1 July 1862.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was again reduced to the rank of Private on 31 October 1862. He reenlisted on 30 January 1864 and transferred to Company E, 82nd New York Infantry on 28 June 1864. He was transferred again, to Company C, 59th New York Infantry on 10 July 1864, and mustered out with them on 30 June 1865 at Munson Hill, VA.
