Age 23, he enlisted on 29 May 1861 on Long Island and mustered in as a Private in Company F, 42nd New York Infantry on 22 June. He was promoted to Corporal on 1 April 1862.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was promoted to Sergeant on 1 March 1863 and was wounded again, at Gettysburg, PA on 3 July 1863. He was discharged for disability, date not given.
