Age 40, he enlisted on long Island, mustered in as a Private in Company A, 42nd New York Infantry on 22 June 1861, and transferred to Company G the next day.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He reenlisted on 22 February 1864 and was transferred to Company B, 82nd New York Infantry on 28 June 1864, then absent, wounded (date and place not given). He transferred again, to Company G of the 59th New York on 10 July. He returned to duty from his wound(s) on 10 September 1864 and was wounded again, on 27 October 1864, place not given. He mustered out with his Company on 30 June 1865 at Munson's Hill, VA.
