A 22 year old laborer, he enlisted in Philadelphia, PA in Company G, 10th United States Infantry on 2 April 1856. He reenlisted on 2 February 1861 at Fort Bridger in the Utah Territory, by then a Sergeant.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.
