Before the Antietam Campaign: Enrolled in Company D, 3rd Regiment, Potomac Home Brigade Infantry on 14 September 1861 at about age 17. In the Antietam Campaign: Captured along with his Regiment at Harpers Ferry on 15 September 1862. The remainder of the War: He mustered out of the Regiment on 14 September 1864. After the War: He married Harriet Elizabeth A. Moore on 20 Dec 1866 in Westernport, Allegany County, Maryland by Rev. D. Sheffer. He was a coal miner and lived in Allegany (now Garrett) County.
