Before the Antietam Campaign:
At the outset of War he joined the Second Regiment NYSM, as private. He raised Company G, Sixty-third regiment, and mustered in as Captain of the Company on September 24, 1861. Discharged on March 10, 1862. Mustered in as Captain, same company, on March 19, 1862.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was wounded in action - slightly, thigh - on 17 September 1862.

The remainder of the War:
Mustered out on consolidation of the regiment, on June 12, 1863.
