Age 40 at enlistment. Mustered in as private, Company H, on October 7, 1861. Promoted to corporal on July 1, 1862.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was mortally wounded in action - knee - on 17 September 1862.

The remainder of the War:
He died of his wounds on October 19, 1862, in a hospital, at Frederick, Md.

MSHWR says ìJ. A. Keefe Pvt H 63d NY. Right leg amputated on October 10, 1862, by A. Surg. L. H. Searle, 26th N.Y. He died on October 19, 1862, exhaustion.î
