Before the Antietam Campaign:
Age 30 at enlistment. Mustered in as private, Company H, on April 3, 1862.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was wounded in action, slightly, leg, on 17 September 1862.

The remainder of the War:
Transferred to Company B on June 12, 1863. He re-enlisted as a veteran on December 21, 1863. Promoted to corporal, and sergeant, no dates. Promoted to sergeant-major on December 22, 1864. Mustered out with regiment on June 30, 1865, at Alexandria, Va. Commissioned, not mustered, first lieutenant on July 1, 1865, with rank from June 1, 1865, vice D. H. Maher, promoted.
