Before the Antietam Campaign:
Age 23 at enlistment. Mustered in as first sergeant, Company H, on October 19, 1861. Returned to ranks, and promoted to corporal, no dates.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was wounded in action, slightly, leg, on 17 September 1862.

The remainder of the War:
Transferred to Company B on June 12, 1863. He re-enlisted as a veteran on December 21, 1863. He deserted on February 5, 1864, on expiration of furlough.
