Before the Antietam Campaign:
In 1851 he was appointed assistant surgeon in the US Army on frontier duty. In April 1861 he commanded a battery at Fort Sumter, and was Major in the 13th US Infantry. In April 1862 he was appointed BGen. of Volunteers, commanded the 1st Brigade/1st Division in the Shenandoah Valley campaign and at Cedar Mountain.

In the Antietam Campaign:
In command of the 1st Brigade in the First Division of BGen Williams' Twelfth (XII) Army Corps, he took over the Division when BGen Williams relieved the wounded MGen Mansfield in command of the Corps. Crawford was himself wounded and relieved by BGen G. Gordon.

The remainder of the War:
He commanded the PA Reserve Corps in the Washington defenses and when they became the 3rd Division/V Corps he led them at Gettysburg, the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, Petersburg, and Five Forks.

After the War:
He continued his career Army service and retired in 1873.
