Before the Antietam Campaign:
In the 1850 Census he was listed as a 29 year old Clerk. By the outbreak of War he was in Scranton, Luzerne County, and served as Colonel of the 3-month 15th Pennsylvania Infantry. He was appointed Colonel of the 132nd as it was organized in mid-August 1862; almost exactly a month before the battle of Antietam.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was killed in command of his Regiment very early in the engagement on September 17th at the Sunken Road.
