Before Sharpsburg
In 1860 he was a 35 year old drayman (wagon driver, deliveryman) in New Orleans, LA. He enlisted at Columbus in Colorado County, TX on 10 July 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company B, 5th Texas Infantry. He was detailed as a wagoner in December 1861 and returned to his company by June 1862.
On the Campaign
He was wounded in both legs in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862 and captured there.
The rest of the War
He was paroled at Sharpsburg on 30 September and admitted to US Army General Hospital #5 in Frederick, MD on 10 October. He was sent on to Fort McHenry in Baltimore the next day, then, on 13 October, to Fortress Monroe, VA for exchange. He was admitted to a hospital in Richmond, VA on 23 October and returned to duty on 14 November 1862. He was captured again, at Chickamauga, GA on 19 September 1863 and was in the military prison at Louisville, KY on 5 September. Two days later he was sent on to Camp Douglas near Chicago, IL. He was released on 16 May 1865 and indicated he was going home to New Orleans, LA.
