Before Sharpsburg

He enlisted on 19 July 1861 at Washington, TX and mustered as a Private in Company E, 5th Texas Infantry. He was appointed Sergeant Major of the regiment on 6 (or 31) October 1861.

On the Campaign

He was bearing the colors and among skirmishers in advance of the regiment when he was killed in action on the evening of 16 September 1862 at Sharpsburg. J.W. Stevens of Company K later remembered:

Allen was killed dead—shot through the breast. He was standing close to my side. I heard the death missile as it hit him, making a sound as though he had slapped his hands together.
