He was promoted to 1st Lt in April 1861, and Captain on 14 August 1862. Service with the 16th: Appointed Colonel 24 August 1862; Captured at Plymouth, NC, 20 April 1864; Exchanged 10 May 1864; Mustered out of Volunteer service 24 June 1865. Retired from US Army 22 August 1871.
