Before the Antietam Campaign: He practiced medicine in Americus, Georgia before the War. Mustered as First Lieutenant, Company K, on 27 April 1861. Elected Captain 27 April 1862. In the Antietam Campaign: He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862. The remainder of the War: Appointed Major in October 1862 and Lieutenant Colonel on 1 November. Killed in action at Gettysburg on 1 July 1863 while in command of his Regiment.
