Before the Antietam Campaign:
He was a 21 year old shoemaker when he enlisted as Private ion 2 September 1861. He had 3 months prior service in Company B of the 5th Massachusetts Infantry.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was listed as a deserter on 17 September 1862.

The remainder of the War:
He enlisted in Company D of the 1st Potomac Home Brigade (MD) Cavalry - "Cole's Cavalry" - on 19 August 1864 under the name of Samuel Sprague [his middle name?]. He mustered out with them in June 1865.
