Before the Antietam Campaign:
He was a 20 year old shoemaker living in Lynn when he enlisted as Private on 2 September 1861. He had prior service in Company D of the 3-month 8th Massachusetts Infantry.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862.

The remainder of the War:
He was again wounded at Cold Harbor, Virginia on 6 June 1864, and mustered out to date from 2 September 1864.
