Before the Antietam Campaign:
He was a 23 year old clerk living in Stoneham when he enlisted as Private on 2 September 1861. He ad prior service in Company L of the 3-month 6th Massachusetts Infantry.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862.

The remainder of the War:
He was discharged for wounds on 8 December 1862.
