He was a 31 year old blacksmith living in Lynn when he enlisted as Private on 2 September 1861.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862.

The remainder of the War:
He was wounded again at Gettysburg on 3 July 1863, and died of his wounds on 18 July in Baltimore.
