Before the Antietam Campaign:
A 23 year old farmer living in Lowell on his enlistement as Private on 2 September 1861. He had previously served in Company A of the 8th Massachusetts Infantry, a 3-month unit. He was wounded in action at Yorktown, Virginia in April or May 1862.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862.

The remainder of the War:
He was discharged for wounds on 12 December 1863 at the rank of Sergeant.

After the War:
He moved to Port Townsend, Washington in 1867.
