Before the Antietam Campaign:
He was a 23 year old shoemaker living in Middleton when he enlisted as Private on 2 September 1861.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862.

The remainder of the War:
He was discharged from the Sharpshooters 5 January 1863 at Washington DC to enlist in the US Regular Army the next day. He was discharged from Company K, 1st US Artillery on 3 August 1864 at Camp Barry, Washington, DC.
