Before the Antietam Campaign:
He was an 18 year old weaver in Lowell when he enlisted as Private on 2 September 1861. He had already served in Company D, 6th Massachusetts Infantry - a 3-month unit.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862.

The remainder of the War:
He was again wounded at Mine Run, Virginia on 28 November 1863. He was mustered out on 12 September 1864 as Corporal.
