He was elected Major of the Regiment on 17 September 1862.

The remainder of the War:
Promoted to Lieutenant Colonel July 2, 1863. He commanded at Gettysburg and Chickamauga. Wounded, Fort Harrison, Virginia September 29, 1864. At Columbus, Georgia, wounded, January 1, 1865. At Danville, Virginia enroute to his command when war closed.
