Before the Antietam Campaign:
He graduated from the USMA in 1842 and served in the Mexican war. He resigned in 1855, and was a banker and militia officer. In October 1861 he was appointed Colonel of the 1st Minnesota Regiment, and led them at Ball's Bluff. In February 1862 he was appointed BGen. of Volunteers, and commanded the 3rd Brigade/2nd Division/II Corps on the Peninsula campaign.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was in command of the 3rd Brigade of the Second Division of Second (II) Corps and was wounded.

The remainder of the War:
In November 1862 he was promoted to MGen. of Volunteers. He then commanded defenses at Philadelphia, served on the Texas Gulf, commanded districts on the Mississippi River, and commanded the Department of the Mississippi.

After the War:
He was a businessman, railroad executive, and deputy commissioner of pensions.
