Before the Antietam Campaign:
Briefly Captain in the 20th Massachusetts Infantry, he was appointed Captain, 2nd Cavalry in August 1861, and transferred to the 1st in November.

The remainder of the War:
He was promoted to Major and returned to the 2nd Mass 31 January 1863. He was then Lt Colonel (March 1864), and finally Colonel and commander of the Regiment on 18 November 1864. He mustered out of the service in June 1865.
