Basic information from Commonwealth of Massachusetts1. He enlisted as Michael A. Fitzgerald (his name in the records). He was a 21 year old bootmaker when he enlisted as Private on 4 April 1862. He was taken prisoner on 1 July 1862 at Gettysburg. He transferred to Company G of the 39th Massachusetts Infantry on 14 July 1864.
