Before the Antietam Campaign:
Enlisted as a private in Company K, 5th Regiment, Georgia State Troops, October 6, 1861. Discharged, disability, December 25, 1861. Enlisted as a private in Company A, 50th Regiment, Georgia Infantry May 22, 1862.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was wounded in action at Fox's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.

The remainder of the War:
Sent to Aiken's Landing for exchange 10/2/1862. Officially considered exchanged 11/10/1862. Appointed 3rd Sergeant December 31, 1862. Captured at Cedar Creek, Virginia, October 19, 1864. Released at Point Lookout, Maryland, June 19, 1865.
