Before the Antietam Campaign:
From Shopiere, he enlisted in Company H, 2nd Wisconsin Infantry on 23 May 1861. Wounded at First Bull Run in July 1861.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was mortally wounded in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The remainder of the War:
Died of Antietam wounds 2 October 1862.
