Before the Antietam Campaign:
He enlisted at age 23 on 12 August 1861in New York City. He mustered in as Private, Company A, 59th New York Infantry on the 16th. He was promoted Corporal in October 1861.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was killed in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The remainder of the War:
He was reinterred from his original burial on the Antietam battlefield to the National Cemetery during or before 1867.
