Before the Antietam Campaign:
He volunteered with the First Company of Minnesota Sharpshooters, and was assigned with them as Company L of the 2nd US Sharpshooters in December 1861.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He died of a 'fever' at Frederick, MD on 30 September 1862.

The remainder of the War:
He was removed from his original burial in Frederick, MD and reinterred at the new National Cemetery in or before 1867.
