He mustered into Company B of the 4th Rhode Island Infantry on 30 Oactober 1861.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was wounded in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862 and died the same day.

The remainder of the War:
He was later reinterred from burial on the Antietam battlefield to the National Cemetery.
