Before the Antietam Campaign:
He graduated from the USMA in 1828, and resigned in 1836, becoming a planter, railroad director, and politician. In September 1861 he was appointed BGen. and saw action at Port Royal. He commanded Drayton's Brigade/D. R. Jones' Division at Second Manassas and South Mountain.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He led Drayton's Brigade in Jones' Division.

The remainder of the War:
After a reportedly poor performance at Sharpsburg he was transferred to the Trans-Mississippi.

After the War:
He was a farmer and insurance agent.
