Before the Antietam Campaign: He was a Captain in the First Massachusetts Infantry May 1861 - July 1862, and was appointed Colonel of the 35th Massachusetts on 21 August 1862. In the Antietam Campaign: He was wounded at South Mountain and lost his arm. The remainder of the War: In April 1863 he was appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, assisted in recruiting US Colored Troops, and commanded the "Wild African Brigade" until close of the war. After the War: He was a mine superindendent, and traveled to South America.
