He was 30 years old when he enlisted on Long Island, and he mustered in as Private, Company F, 42nd New York Infantry on 22 June 1861. He was promoted to Corporal on 1 April 1862.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was killed in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.
