Before the Antietam Campaign:
He enlisted at age 25 on 18 September 1861 at Ashland, Ohio, and mustered in as Private, Oompany I, 59th New York Infantry on 19 October. He transferred to Company H in November or December 1861.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was mortally wounded in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The remainder of the War:
He died of wounds received at Antietam on 24 September 1862.
