Before the Antietam Campaign: Company A, 3rd NJ Infantry was commanded by Captain Henry W. Brown, who briefly served in that capacity from May 23, to May 31 1861. Colonel Taylor was the regiment's commander until May 9, 1862. and was then succeeded by Lt. Colonel Henry W. Brown. He was promoted Colonel May 15, 1862 when Taylor was made Brigadier General.
