He was mortally wounded in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

He died of wounds at Sharpsburg on 21 September 1862.

Burial from the Antietam Cemetery History,1 which has him in Company E. Service information from Ingersoll.2 His ANC gravesite is on Findagrave. He also has a marker at the Grove Street Cemetery, Putnam, CT (via Findagrave) which has him as Clinton Fessenden.
